Ainsley Carl Memorial

Dearest Lakeview family,

This has been such a difficult week.  Please know that writing this letter is not something we ever thought we would have to do and I dare say are equipped to do but as your friends, fellow Moms and your PTSA, we wanted to reach out to share some important information about precious Ainsley and the Carl family.

First and foremost, we hope you and yours are well.  The loss of Ainsley has definitely rocked our little community and we are now left with a huge void and tremendous sadness, our thoughts and heartfelt prayers go out to the Carl family and to each of you as together we navigate this most difficult time.  As many of you know, Ainsley’s Memorial will take place, Saturday December 2nd, at 11 am in Bellevue at the Sunset Hills Memorial Park.  The Carl family truly welcomes you and your family and has made tomorrow’s celebration of Ainsley’s life very family friendly.  A close family friend wanted to pass along this message regarding tomorrow’s memorial as follows:

“It’s intended to be a celebration, with a candle lighting while a photo video plays and mural for kids to color and sign. It will be a closed casket, with Ainsley’s artwork and pink and purple everywhere. But, I’m sure there will be lots of tearful speakers.”

So, kids are absolutely welcome and definitely encouraged, but it may not be the best environment for some children so please use your own parental discretion and best judgment.

In addition, many of you have inquired and expressed interest as how you can best support and offer assistance to the Carl family.  Just recently, the PTSA was apprised of several ways that we can support the Carl family and are honored to pass the information along to you.

Memorial Funds for the Carl family:

  • Memorial fund in honor of Ainsley. If you are interested in supporting – please donate here. Funds will go towards Asthma research through the American Lung Association in Ainsley’s honor.
  • Fund to offset funeral costs. Those of you who are interested in contributing to the funeral costs, we have also set up a fund here.

Here is Ainsley’s obituary if you would like to share your condolences in the virtual guestbook.

Thank you all for your continued support, prayers and patience as we are all truly blessed by a community that is loving, compassionate and giving…take good care.

Fondly,
Elizabeth, Kim and your Lakeview PTSA

2018 LWSD Bond and Levies

The Lakeview PTSA voted at the November 16, 2017 member meeting to endorse the 2018 LWSD Bond, 2018 Capital Projects Levy and 2018 Educational Programs and Operations Levy.

Lakeview PTSA encourages all Lakeview families and friends to vote YES for the three LWSD initiatives on February 13, 2018.

Why do we need a bond? For the past 7 years our district has added 700 students each year. LWSD is now the third largest school district in the state! As a result our schools are bursting at the seems. The 2018 Bond includes building a new elementary school in the Kirkland area and an addition at LW High School.

Why should I vote yes for the levies? These levies pay for many things we might consider basic yet the state does not fund. The Capital Projects Levy pays for building maintenance (playgrounds, heating, roofing, security, fire protection, etc)  and technology (computers, printers, software, etc). The Educational Programs and Operations Levy pays for substitute teachers, nurses, ELL staff, Special Education staff, transportation staff as well as staff for Quest and preschools.

The Bond and 2 Levies will not raise the tax rate and will actually go down from $3.16 to $2.93 per thousand AV.

Here are things you can do to help:

  • Register to vote no later than January 15! Encourage your friends to register to vote! It only takes five minutes and you can do it online: www.vote.wa.gov
  • Like the campaign Facebook page and invite your friends to like it: www.facebook.com/VoteForLakeWashingtonKids
  • Spread the word to your friends, family, neighbors and colleagues, even if they don’t have kids in school. Here are the top reasons to vote yes
  • Here are 3 one-page fact sheets about the bond and two levies.

PTSA Member Meeting November 16

Save the date for the next PTSA Member Meeting on November 16 at 7PM.

We will have a guest speaker from the LWSD Board of Directors. Chris Carlson will speak and answer questions about the proposed 2018 Bond and Levies.

On October 16, 2017, the LWSD School Board voted to approve a bond and two replacement levies for the February 13, 2018 ballot. The proposed bond includes the construction of an additional elementary school for the Lake Washington Learning Community. The district created a fact sheet about the bond and levies. Additional information can be found on the district website.

Lakeview PTSA members will vote at the member meeting as to whether or not the PTSA will support the proposed bond and levies.

Meet the PTSA Presidents

Well it’s that time, the beginning of the school year is officially here!  On behalf of the Lakeview PTSA we want to welcome all the new parents and students as well as those who are returning from last year. We certainly hope you had a most enjoyable summer and are well-rested and ready for an amazing 2017-2018 school year.

As the new co-presidents of the PTSA we invite you to come meet your Lakeview PTSA and learn how you can make a difference in your children’s academic and social life. We will be having copious coffee chats, meet and greets, open membership meetings and are always available to discuss ideas and answer any and all questions. Please feel free to bend our ear in the hallway if you see us as we are amiable, available and excited to be a part of Lakeview Elementary. We seriously cannot wait to make your acquaintance!

Cheers!

Standing Rules Updates

Every year the PTSA must adopt the standing rules for our organization. When changes are proposed we post them in advance to give everyone time to review before the next member meeting. This year we had a number of changes as we cleaned things up and updated them to be in alignment with the Washington State PTA Bylaws.

Here are the current Standing Rules as approved in September 2016.

Here are new proposed Standing Rules for 2017-2018 for review and to be voted at the August 31 PTSA Member Meeting.

Here is a document outlining the changes.

The Lakeview PTSA is governed by all Washington State PTA Bylaws not specifically addressed in these standing rules.

Announcing Lakeview Nutrition Program

Following on the Heels of this Fall’s wonderfully successful Lakeview ASB Snack/Food drive to support Hopelink and families in need, the Lakview PTSA would like to introduce the new PTSA Lakeview Nutrition Program.

The Lakeview Nutrition Program will collect donations to support the existing Lakeview Snack Programs and Pantry Pack Program. This program is designed to supplement and assist with students nutritional needs, as well as to ensure that ALL our kids learn with their tummies full. 1 in 7 Lakeview students need help meeting their daily nutritional needs (14%). Our goal is to facilitate, support and improve access to food, so no one in our Lakeview community goes hungry.

As a very first step we invite the Lakeview community to bring snack items (see list below) or a monetary donation to any future Lakeview event. Starting at Multi-Cultural Night on December 1, 2016, there will always be a donation bin present at Lakeview events, so you can help neighbors in need.

If you have any questions or would like to help end hunger in our community, please contact Lale Giray or Karee Oliver.
